Real estate lawyers, divorce lawyers and criminal lawyers are sought each and every day, but where do you find a good tax lawyer? The services of a tax lawyer are generally only employed in the run up to the tax deadline. More often it’s after tax time.
Not being on top of your taxes can be a nightmare but when that deadline comes things seem to pile up. This is when you need the tax lawyer and need him fast. The last thing you need is the government coming after you for not filing a tax return.
Finding a tax lawyer is not that difficult but you have never used the services of a tax lawyer before you obviously won’t know where to start looking. Check the phonebook first and call the offices of the law practices listed as many tax lawyers may not be listed as tax lawyers but as firms instead. The yellow pages is a start in finding a tax lawyer but the tax lawyer you want is one with experience and efficiency.
This is the point where you think of all your self employed friends or neighbors because they obviously need to file tax returns and more than likely they will use a tax lawyer to do so. Ask them if they se a tax lawyer, what his/her fees are, is he/she efficient and did they experience any problems using their services.
What you need to find out is if the tax lawyer is reliable and if they are capable of getting the job done with minimal interruption to you. Ideally a tax lawyer with previous experience as a tax collector or working with the revenue service in some capacity would suit perfectly. This is not always going to be the case and you may have to use the services of whatever tax lawyer is in your locality.
